PUBLIC PETITIONS

Ellis Flaws of unincorporated Matteson noted with sadness the passing of Dewey Helmick, a former three term Supervisor at Rich Township and major sponsor of the Old Plank Road Trail. He also updated the Board on the Crawford Countryside Sanitary District.

REPORTS OF OFFICERS

Supervisor: Supervisor Al Riley commented on the passing of former Supervisor Dewey Helmick, noting his years of public service in the Rich Township area.

Supervisor Riley attended a ribbon cutting for new offices of Sertoma in Matteson, an intermodal infrastructure meeting, a nursing forum at South Suburban Hospital, Richton Park’s “neighbor to neighbor” dinner, legislative forums at Flossmoor Library and Christ Hospital, Thornton Township’s Leadership Luncheon, “Prevention First” Red Ribbon Gala, 100 Men Association Breakfast, modeled in the Food Pantry’s Fashion Show Fundraiser and was commencement speaker at Everest College.

Clerk: Clerk Bobbie King noted that she collects clothing and funds for Tabitha Clothing Pantry all year round, but it increases during the winter months.

Clerk King attended a LaRabida Jolie Burrell Children Advocacy Center meeting, our Senior Center’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, a Community Education Forum at Rich East High School, and the Food Pantry’s Fashion Show fundraiser.

Assessor: Assessor Carol Ranieri reported that the 2nd installments of the 2008 real estate tax bills are due on December 1st. She also noted that the mailing of the 2009 assessment notices, and the 2nd installment tax bills so close together caused confusion for many taxpayers. Assessor Ranieri reported that for the 2009 assessment period, her office averaged 60-70 people in the office a day, and 40-50 phone calls daily.

Assessor Ranieri noted that re-assessments are done every 3 years, and that this is the first time that there have been two re-assessment notices back to back, adding that this was a result of the downturn in the market.

Assessor Ranieri announced that she was elected as Secretary of the Cook County Township Assessor’s Association Executive Board for another 2 years, and that she attended the Food Pantry’s Fashion Show fundraiser.

Highway Commissioner: Highway Commissioner Calvin Jordan reported that his annual fall clean up day for the unincorporated areas went very well. He noted that the annual Holiday Lights Tour and Dinner for seniors would be on December 11th.

Highway Commissioner Jordan attended the dedication of a new home to a veteran in

Richton Park, St. James’ Gala, Olympia Fields Haunted House, and Flossmoor’s Volunteer Firefighter Association event.

Trustee Caesar-Smith: Absent

Trustee Goodrich: Attended an informational program on “planning and goal setting”, TOCC Trustees Division Dinner meeting, our Senior Center’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, Park Forest Historical Society workshop, volunteered with PADS, former Supervisor Dewey Helmick’s memorial service, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra Fashion Show and modeled in the Food Pantry’s Fashion Show Fundraiser.

Trustee Johnson: Attended the TOCC Trustees Division Dinner meeting, 3rd Annual Chicago Defender Gala, Howard University’s Homecoming, Illinois Department of Public Health’s Award Ceremony for scientists, and was “Principal for the Day” at Medgar Evers Elementary School. He also noted that a week in November is “Global Entrepreneurship Week” at Governors State University, and will include a special “veteran’s boot camp”.

Trustee Bobis: Noted that he met with Public Information Director Mary Paleologos. He added that he was making arrangements to attend homeowner’s association meetings.

Trustee Bobis attended the Food Pantry Fashion Show, and is looking forward to attending more events.
